I have been pondering about this as well. My preliminary conclusion is that i) it is not a bad thing to have special days marked out from usual days. It's like the foreground and background in music. =p
ii) more deeply, year-cycles connects one with the rhythm of the universe, of nature. It was important to ancient civilizations as it was to the Church. It is a good thing to have landmarks as thus, to 'know where you are' in temporality. (is the barline just an excuse for the build up towards a downbeat, for some anxiety and fun?)
- if nothing on earth was arbitrary, it would be such a boring world! -
